Matthew Pattemore has been working as a post-doctoral researcher with the Language and AI in Education research group at the IWM since August 2025. His main interests are the use of digital tools for Second Language Acquisition (SLA), particularly the use of video games and the effectiveness of corrective feedback. Among his projects at the IWM are studies into the effects of different activity and question types on cognitive difficulty, the interaction of attention, proficiency, and types of corrective feedback on children’s digital language learning, lexical requirements for learning from interactive multimedia, and investigating the links between formative digital activity performance and summative assessment scores. He also supports the members of the research group on theoretical SLA matters.
Matthew graduated from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, with degrees in Law, English, History, and International Law and Politics before undertaking a Masters in Applied Linguistics and Language Acquisition in Multilingual Contexts then a PhD in Applied Linguistics at the University of Barcelona. His thesis focused on corrective feedback in digital reading development games for children. In addition, Matthew has undertaken research stays at KU Leuven, Belgium and Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, the Netherlands. He has more than a decade’s experience across several countries as an English language teacher, and currently serves on the executive committee of the European Second Language Association.
