New Name for IWM Lab

9 Dec 2021

Perception and Action – this is the new name of Lab 4 at the IWM. The new title replaces its previous name, Knowledge Exchange. “I am very pleased about the name change. The new name very well reflects the research profile of the lab that has been developed over the past two years,” says Prof. Dr. Markus Huff, who has headed Lab 4 since 2020.

The core task of the lab is to investigate how content in texts, comics or videos conveyed through digital media is perceived and mentally structured. In addition, the lab investigates the impacts of this perceptual process on human action for example, in relation to the interaction with media. Special consideration is given to the specific characteristics of the media - for example, the combination of textual and pictorial elements - and the actors - for example, their expertise, attitudes, and abilities. In doing so, the lab has defined four primary areas of research: Multicodal Perception, Perception and Interaction in Social Networks, Perception and Action with Digital Agents and Risk Perceptions of Artificial Intelligence. The research approach is interdisciplinary through collaborations with Computer Science and Educational Science.
