IWM Lecture

Brendan Rooney: UCD ME_Lab: Using media and entertainment to explore emotion and social cognition

This talk will provide an overview of the lab’s research, from studies examining cognition and emotion in media contexts to applied projects aimed at enhancing well-being through immersive technology. Current work explores how media design elements interact with emotional and cognitive responses, with a focus on executive function, subjective realism, and social cognition. The talk will also present ongoing applied research aimed at supporting well-being, with immersive media such as VR and music in healthcare contexts. This research aims to create meaningful entertainment experiences and investigate how immersive media can empower individuals to foster positive outcomes.

Dr. Brendan Rooney is the Director of the Media and Entertainment Psychology Lab at University College Dublin, where the lab pursues two main goals: (1) conducting basic research on the processes and experiences of engaging with media entertainment, and (2) embedding learning and positive change within immersive or entertainment activities.
