Christian Kohls: The impact of learning space design – lessons from HybridLR

Christian Kohls is a professor at the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering Science at the Cologne Institute for Digital Ecosystems at TH Köln (University of Applied Sciences) in Cologne.

"Learning spaces have a major influence on learning activities and should offer scope for a rich repertoire of activities and social interactions. Starting in 2020, we ran a three-year research project called “Hybrid Learning Spaces (HybridLR)”, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Our goal was to identify good practices for designing hybrid learning spaces. This lecture discusses the findings from over 100 university visits in Europe, Asia, and the US that took place during and after the project. The outcomes are generalized as design patterns, which reflect on contexts, forces, solution decisions, and consequences. Patterns help to combine theoretical and practical knowledge; they provide design guidance based on empirical findings. We will explore the process of identifying patterns and making them accessible to a wider audience. Based on case studies, we will see how the application of design patterns can transform existing learning spaces and pedagogical settings in higher education."
