IWM Lecture
This talk will explore recent efforts to adapt trust and trustworthiness research from across the social sciences to the study and practice of science communication. It will draw on past studies seeking to adapt measures from organizational psychology to the scientific context, as well as ongoing efforts to provide actionable evidence to the scientific community on what scientists can do to foster trustworthiness beliefs and earn trust. A key issue at the heart of the discussion is what may be missing when we fail to differentiate between trust behaviors and trustworthiness beliefs. A central goal of the talk will be to discuss potential research gaps and how these may limit both our conceptual understanding of trust/trustworthiness and our ability to use trust research to support science communicators.
